3 Underrated Tips to Help you Calm Down When You're Feeling Overwhelmed
We all have our moments when we are feeling completely overwhelmed.
Often swarmed with a plethora of work. So much in fact that we don’t even know where to start.
Combine that with your own personal goals of eating healthy, getting to the gym, spending time with loved ones, and most importantly setting time aside for yourself to just unwind and relax.
But it is when we start to get overwhelmed that we lose control of our emotions.
This is when you start to get frustrated when something you’re working on takes longer than expected.
Or when you get easily irritated when someone interrupts what you’re working on.
What do you do then to help yourself calm down when you feel like you’re gonna explode?
In this blog post, I will give you a few tips on how to help you relax when you feel like you’re gonna bite someone’s head off.
Here we go!
1) Find a Release
Now when I say find a release I do not mean to go out and punch a wall or yell at the top of your lungs.
Trust me, punching a wall is not a good idea.
Instead, how about when you’re feeling anxious or angry try to get up and go get a quick workout in.
Whether its going for a walk, taking a quick lap or jog outside, or even doing some push-ups or sit-ups just to get the blood flowing.
Exercise is a great way to take your mind off your anger and make you feel good.
One trick I learned while taking a walk is to utilize all 5 of your senses and to think about what’s going on around you.
The next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a walk outside and take note of what you see, feel, smell, taste, and hear.
Do you hear the birds chirping? Or notice the cars driving by? How does the wind feel brushing up against your face?
Have you ever paid attention to how good your clothes actually feel on your body, or do you just follow the same routine without even noticing?
These are some ideas on how you can use your senses when you’re feeling so overwhelmed you just wanna break down.
2) Listen to Music
You guys know how much I love music!
Listening to calming music really helps you get your mind off of things and allows you to find your balance when feeling overwhelmed.
Whenever you start to feel irritated, create a relaxing playlist.
It's better to create the playlist while you're feeling certain emotions because that is the time you are going to want to hear certain songs.
I like to create multiple playlist for different moods.
For example I have a playlist called “one of them days” that I created for when I am having a long and really challenging day.
This playlist is for the days where I just want to give up because I am so overwhelmed with work.
But when I listen to this playlist and start singing along to the songs it takes my mind off of work and I just go with the flow.
If you need some inspiration you can check out my "need some new vibes" playlist here, or my "instrumentals" playlist here.
3) Take a deep breath
This is probably the best way to help you relax due to the fact that when you’re really angry, you don’t really take deep breaths.
When you can sit down and really focus on you’re breathing you can get enough oxygen to your brain helping you calm down.
The next time you’re feeling angry or like you’re drowning in work. Take a minute to practice deep breathing.
If you have an Apple Watch (which I recommend) use the breathing app on your watch to help you focus on your breathing.
If you don’t have an Apple Watch, then I suggest sitting down comfortably and taking 10 long deep breaths in through your nose and exhaling slowly out of your mouth.
Really pay attention to your body here.
Be mindful of your chest expanding while you’re breathing in and relaxing as you’re breathing out.
And there you have it. These are my top 3 tips to help you calm down.
